Spring’s Been Soaked — But We’re Still Growing Strong Hey Millsap, We’ve had a lot of rain this spring—more than we can remember in years. April brought over 13 inches of rain, the wettest April ever recorded in Springfield, and May followed with over 9 inches—nearly double the usual amount. That much water brings its share of headaches. Wet soils are hard on tender roots, tough to work, and can leach out nutrients before crops have a chance to soak them in. But that’s just part of the story..
It's the end of May already! How time flies! We are looking forward to a few days of sunshine after all that rain. The answer to every question today has been "it's too wet". But the sun will have things dried up in no time and we will be able to get back into the fields to keep the veggies planted and tended. This week felt like Summer was upon us! the air and soil are rapidly warming, the plants are responding with rapid growth, both the summer weeds and the summer veggies. We're weeding, harvesting, and planting like crazy... What a fantastic week for growing vegetables!!! The sun shone, the breeze blew, and the veggies grew... We have lots of gorgeous salad fixings in the shares this week, with asparagus from the Amish Produce auction, and salad mix from Box Turtle Farm. The tomatoes in the high tunnel are growing fast; hoping we might get a small cherry tomato harvest next week, if this wonderful sunshine continues, and the cucumbers are just starting as well.
